About Icies

We found ourselves with Icelandic Sheepdogs after searching for a versatile breed that could meet all of our criteria. It is a daunting task to find a dog that meets all our requirements: good with any other dog (including Japanese Akitas), good with kids (we run an elementary school on our farm), good with livestock (ALL livestock, including chickens), an easy keeper (no baths or grooming required), and a Spitz (because we would rather have a soft, snuggly, hairy dog than a smelly dog).

Little did we know that we could have all these qualities in such a beautiful, snuggly package. “Bright” does not do justice to this dog, they are brilliant with a personality to match. Because of their eagerness to learn, we start their training as soon as their ears and eyes open. They have been bred to do many different tasks in Iceland making them a great choice for herding, agility, search and rescue, obedience, treiball, therapy, diabetic alert, etc. They love to work, and they enjoy learning. They are enthusiastic sheepdogs that use their voice and an upright posture to move the livestock. Because birds of prey are one of the main predators of Icelandic Sheep, these dogs have been bred to scan the skies and alert their masters of airborne attacks.

Above all, they love their people. They want to be close by and keep an eye on their keeper, bonding with their person. You will never be alone with this dog at your side.

Our Dogs

AKC GCH CH, INT/NAT CH, Töfra Kelikatur TDI, CGC

Kelikatur, aka ‘Tenzing’, is a direct import from Iceland and came to us from Monika Karlsdottir’s Töfra Kennels. Kelikatur (meaning ‘happy cuddles’ in Icelandic) has certainly been that to our family. He loves romping in the fields, herding the sheep, giving kisses, and snuggling. Thank you Monika for letting one of your family travel the long distance to join our family. Tenzing received his Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog International Certifications in 2008 and has been a regular visitor at Carden Country School as a certified therapy dog. Tenzing has had great success in the confirmation ring and has recently earned his AKC grand championship.

He is the proud papa of GCH CH Eyjahunda Thorrarinn “Bubbie”, the first AKC Best In Show winner.

Runamuck Gustur

Runamuck Gustur, aka “Gus-Gus”, was raised from birth by my daughter, who of course fell in love with all six of our puppies. However, she couldn’t part with Gus, the fat one who slept all day and hogged all the water. It was a difficult decision, but we decided that we should keep him on the farm. Although he has slimmed down tremendously, he still hogs the water and sleeps most of the day. In February 2010, Gus moved to Scotland to live with my daughter. He is still a puppy at heart, and my daughter is working very hard to train him to be ok with not living on the farm. Gus now loves taking a long 45 minute walk through some neighboring farms and studying with his girl.

Sandcreek Denali TDI, CGC

We came across the Sand Creek website on accident, but fell in love with Denali’s picture right away. Every since she joined our family, she has shown us just how smart Icelandics can be. She was my training subject for the Karen Pyror Academy Professional Animal Training Course and the first Icelandic to graduate the course. She loves herding the sheep (which she does instinctively without any training), working on her ten-point chain, and keeping me to herself.

Retired from Breeding

Töfra Perla Prud

Perla Prud, aka “Ru”, came from Töfra Kennels in Iceland. She is from the rare O Line. She was bred primarily for temperament and trainability. Both parents are lovely, social dogs, who make friends wherever they go. Ru follows perfectly in their footsteps. She is a vivacious, sparkly little girl. She is a great prospect for search and rescue and loves tracking. She will be living with Gus-Gus and my daughter. Karen Pryor International Students were in town this last spring and Ru was a perfect candidate for a “loaner” dog.

AKC Star-Puppy 2010

Gaefa Fra Raudu Hanastodum

Gaefa, aka “Skye”, came to us from the Netherlands. After celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, my husband and I stopped over in the Netherlands and met my anniversary gift. Skye is sweet and loyal. She was wonderfully attentive to our little lamb Maybe, who had to live in our Family Room this last spring. She made a perfect “loaner” dog this last spring to a group of Karen Pryor International Trainers, who were in town working on their certifications.

Pineridge Tyra

“Kilimanjaro” is our first Icelandic and she has a wonderful, bubbly personality. She brings sunshine with her wherever she goes. She currently prances around San Francisco with one of my kids enjoying the beaches and all the interesting characters. She even met Parker Posey.
